A que no sabias Las auténticas propiedades del Aloe vera

Desde hace siglos se han dado numerosos usos médicos y cosméticos a esta planta. ¿Cuál es la clave de su éxito? Y, sobre todo, ¿puede ser dañina?





  El Aloe vera está de moda, y sobre sus numerosas propiedades medicinales, cosméticas, nutricionales y hasta culinarias se ha escrito mucho. Hace más de 2.000 años, los sabios griegos ya lo consideraban la panacea universal. Y los antiguos egipcios se referían a él como la planta de la inmortalidad. Pero ¿por qué se la venera tanto? De hecho, ¿estamos completamente seguros de que su uso no tiene efectos perjudiciales?

Es indudable que buena parte del éxito del Aloe vera se debe a algunas de las propiedades que le confieren los compuestos que se encuentran en ella. Así, contiene vitaminas A, C, E –betacarotenos y antioxidantes– y también del grupo B, como la B12, folato –forma aniónica del ácido fólico (B9)– y colina.

Asimismo, en el aloe es posible encontrar enzimas que ayudan a reducir la inflamación de la piel y a descomponer azúcares y grasas; minerales, como el calcio, el hierro, el magnesio, el potasio y el zinc, entre otros; unos compuestos denominados antraquinonas, que poseen propiedades laxantes, analgésicas y antibacterianas; ácidos grasos; y esteroides vegetales de acción antiinflamatoria y analgésica.

No obstante, su eficacia no está del todo demostrada. Por ejemplo, aunque algunos estudios indican que las sustancias presentes en el gel del aloe contribuyen a eliminar las bacterias y mejoran la circulación de los vasos sanguíneos, por lo que podría ayudar a cicatrizar pequeñas heridas, otros sugieren justo lo contrario. De hecho, algunos expertos advierten que hay que tener especial precaución cuando se emplea como laxante, ya que puede llegar a provocar cólicos intestinales.


 Asimismo, su utilización a largo plazo puede originar desequilibrios hidroelectrolíticos y afectar negativamente a pacientes con problemas cardiacos. Además, un uso inadecuado puede resecar la piel y, en ciertos casos, se ha observado una relación entre un consumo abusivo del aloe y la aparición de ciertos problemas renales y hepáticos.
